In the bustling streets of Gwalior, where history meets modern life, choosing between online apps and the local pharmacies can make a significant difference in your health regimen.

Living in a well-established city like Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh (M.P.), getting medicines should ideally be simple and stress-free. While most medicines are easily available at neighbourhood pharmacies, hectic daily schedules and traffic in prominent areas, such as Vivekanand Marg, Maharaj Bada, and Tansen Road, can turn a quick pharmacy visit into a time-consuming task.

In such a situation, to save time and effort, people often choose between ordering medicines through online pharmacy apps or arranging delivery from nearby local pharmacies. Curious to see which option works better, I tried both methods over a few weeks. Here is my experience comparing online pharmacy delivery with local pharmacy delivery.

Online Pharmacy Delivery: Convenient but Slow

Since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, online pharmacies have become very popular in India. Apps like Tata 1mg, PharmEasy, and TruMed allow users to order medicines through their smartphones. These apps offer a wide variety of medicines, including homoeopathic, ayurvedic, and allopathic products. In addition to delivering medicines, many platforms provide medical information and online doctor consultations.

Online pharmacy platforms make purchasing medicines simple and convenient for users. Medicines can be ordered anytime, from anywhere, using a smartphone. Many apps also offer useful features such as prescription uploads, medicine reminders, and automatic refills for conditions like diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorder, and other long-term issues.

To test this, I ordered common medicines such as antacids, antipyretics, and painkillers through PharmEasy. The app was easy to use; uploading a prescription, searching for medicines, and placing an order were smooth. The medicines were delivered the very next day after placing the order, well-packed, with proper expiry checks and genuine stock, which was reassuring. However, when an ayurvedic formulation was ordered, the delivery took slightly longer.

Another platform I tried was TrueMeds, where I ordered anti-diabetic medicines and antacids. Although the expected delivery window was up to three days, my order arrived the very next day.

Reviews for such services are often mixed: while many people appreciate the wide range of products available, others report delays and limited customer support. In my case, the delivery was satisfactory, but it may not be ideal for people who require urgent medicines.

Local Pharmacy Delivery: Quick Service, Familiar Face

Local pharmacies in Gwalior continue to play an important role in everyday healthcare. Many neighbourhood chemists provide home delivery services; customers need to call the store or send their prescription through WhatsApp to place an order.

One major advantage of local pharmacies is the personal interaction they offer. Pharmacists often recognise regular customers and can guide them about medicines, proper dosage, or possible alternatives. If a particular medicine is not available in the store, they can usually arrange it quickly through nearby distributors.

To check how efficient this service is, I ordered medicines from Ganesh Medical Store, a nearby medical shop around the Maharaj Bada area in Lashkar. The store already stocked most of my regular medicines, and after placing the order, the medicines were delivered to my home within two to three hours.

Similarly, I ordered some common medicines from Govind Medical Store, located in the Lala Ka Bazar area. In this case as well, they delivered the medicines the same evening, which was quite convenient.

In my experience, local pharmacies delivered medicines much faster than expected. Some pharmacies also provide free delivery within a limited distance, making the service even more convenient.

Local pharmacies may also offer small discounts of around 10-20% on medicines, especially for regular customers or when medicines are purchased in larger quantities.

However, there is one limitation: stock availability. Smaller pharmacies may not always carry every brand or specialised medicine. In such situations, they may need a few hours or sometimes a day to arrange the required medicine.

My Verdict

After comparing both options in Gwalior, it becomes clear that each system has its own advantages. Online pharmacies are useful for ordering routine medicines, managing monthly refills, and comparing prices across different brands. On the other hand, local pharmacies are far more reliable when medicines are needed urgently, as they usually provide quicker access and faster delivery.

In practice, using both options can be convenient; online platforms help with planning and saving money, while nearby medical stores ensure immediate availability during emergencies.

However, local pharmacies are a much better option because they offer faster service, personal interaction with pharmacists, and dependable access to medicines when needed most.
